Australian First Lady Visits National Library of Indonesia

ALEMBA -- Australian First Lady Mrs. Therese Rein Kevin Rudd, wife of Australian Prime Minister Kevin Ruud visited National Library of Indonesia, Friday (13/6) at Jalan Salemba Raya 28A Jakarta. Mrs. Kevin Rudd was accompanied by SIKIB management (Solidarity of Wives of United Indonesian Cabinet) Erna Witoelar, wife of Australian Ambassador Mrs. Bill Falmer, some staffs of Ministry of Foreign Affair and staf of state secretariat, they were welcomed by Director of National Library of Indonesia Dady P. Rachmananta and some echelon 1,2 and 3 officers.

Mrs. Kevin Rudd was very enthusiastic to see some ancient manusripts collection, according to her, the rare collection is Indonesia`s heritage which have to be preserved. She said that a nation is well known because of its cultural heritage, including how the country manage its library. "Indonesia already has the criterion, since I`ve seen all the collection kept at this National LIbrary is very well manage and comprehensive, which could provide information to describe its cultural diversity," she said.

Collection which attract attention from Mrs. Kevin Rudd were Negara Kretagama, Kartini`s letters book and others. Beside that, the Australian First Lady was also looking at smart car owned by SIKIB and Pusteling car owned by National Library of Indonesia. During the occasion Mrs. Rudd and the parties took a picture together with Director of National Library of Indonesia and Staffs.

Visit Library with The Man of Letters

SALEMBA - Indonesian artist and poet Taufiq Ismail propose a sinergy with National Library of Indonesia trough an event called visit library with writers, said the famous writer on his visit to National Library of Indonesia, Friday (20/6) he was welcomed by Director of National Library of Indonesia Dady P. Rachmananta at Director Meeting Room Salemba jakarta. Taufiq Ismail was accompanied by editor-in-chief of Horison magazine Jamal D. Rachman and the executive director Ati Ismail, he said that his coming to NLI beside just visit also to held some events which could enrich the children of this nation`s diversity by giving understanding of the importance of library for the barrenness of knowledge.

Library is the warehouse of science. In a library it`s kept human civilization recording in a good way, and from library the effort of developing human civilization was began and done,"said the poet who recently launched the book 55 years of Taufiq Ismail Works. that`s why he continued, it`s not surprising if library became the benchmark of communities development progress. and developing a library is an obligation for a community who want their civilisation went up.

Horison Magazine Editor-in-chief Jamal D. Rachman mentioned that in the context of promoting the importance of library for the progress of civilisation, it is also important to grow reading interest in the community and visit library as early as possible, and in the end for progress of the community. Especially in big cities, shopping malls have grow a new trend between young generation, ie hanging out in a mall, which kept them away from library. that was also restated by Ati Ismail which said that without real effort to attract them to library environment, they will become a generation which closed with mall and unfamiliar with library. This trend should be anticipated by holding a program which will push them to love library. "visit library with poet program was put forward as an effort to bring students to library," She said.

Meanwhile Director of National Library of Indonesia Dady P. Rachmananta who was accompanied by Head of Center of Library Services and Information Woro Titi Haryanti and Head of Public Relation Agus Sutoyo
had a good respond to the sinergis program, he hoped that the program will become a routine to encourage children and students to use a library which enrich with knowledge. "to library with the man of letters, I think very suitable as an interesting activity to motivate students to use library collection of letters and culture," he said. During the occasion, The Poet Taufiq Ismail handed over several books he wrote, and a proposal of to library with the man of letters to propose the sinergis activity.

Commemoration of 35 Years of IPI

Jakarta. in commemorating its birthday on 7th July 2008, Association of Indonesian LIbrarian (IPI) held a ceremony of IPI`s 35
anniversary, on Monday (7/7) at auditorium hall National Library of Indonesia, Jl. Salemba Raya No.28 A Jakarta. The small ceremony was to commemorating the struggle history of IPI from its establishment on 7 July 1973 at Ciawi, Bogor until now under supervision of Dady P. Rachmananta.

On his welcoming remarks, Director of NLI who is also the chairman of IPI Dady P. Rachmananta asked all librarian to keep struggling so that in the time librarian will become a profession which in line with other profession like lawyer or doctor.
Furthermore he said that currently most people think that librarian is a profession that does not need special skill, this view must be changed since librarian need special skil and have a great contribution in developing the life of this nation.

Pictures of IPI history from 1973 to 2008 were shown to the audience to commemorate what and why IPI must exist. a chinese
proverb said that "to get to 1000th step we need the 1st step". IPI secretary General Zulfikar Zen who lead the program reminded
the audience not to forget those who had struggled so there is a forum for librarian in this beloved country.

National Library of Indonesia work together with Batam Authority

Batam Island - Director of National Library of Indonesia Dady P. Rachmananta signed an MoU with Chairman of Authority of Industrial Development Batam Island Mustopa Wijaya, on Friday (8/8) at Marketing Center Batam Authority Office. According to Head of Secretariat Bureau Gani Lasa, the signature of MoU was aimed to strengthen the cooperation being built, since authority is preparing a representative library."Currently we have 2052 collection which were collected from some units within the office," he said. Furthermore, Gani lasa said that by this agreement with National Library of Indonesia, we hoped this library could become a gateway to develop human resources at Authority office, and in the future become a public library to serve all Batam Island people. "We intentionally made an agreement with National Libraryh since library experts are there, so library standard could have minimal error" he added.

Chairman of Authority Mustopa Wijaya very grateful of library development in his office, since library will contribute more variation to the duty and function of authority office in broaden the horizon and other information needs. "In line with this library development, I also instructed to all officers and staffs who have an offsite visits out of town, must bring some books, 2 minimal to be stored at the library," he reminded. Mustopa also hoped at the 37th anniversary of Batam Authority on 26 October 2008 the library has been established.

Meanwhile Director of National Library of Indonesia said that through this agreement library standard will comply with the regulations."since cataloging has its own standard, for example catalog card, the standard size is 12.5 cm x 7.5 cm in all country", he said. so National Library very grateful with the agreement initiated by the authority office and fully supporting the development of library in this island. "this is in line with the movement which was inaugurated by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on 17 May 2006, i.e the movements of library empowerment in the society," he revealed. Beside that, Dady hoped in the future the Authority`s library could become a public library, since public library has a wider service scope, because a special library will only serving the authorities` employee. "I also hoped after the library has been established, the book acquisition would be faster, since we know that library users expecting new books, just like a book store. it`s just according to President decree No.80, books are assets so the acquisition must through a bidding. where in fact books are the blood of library just like medicine for hospital or ammunition for soldiers.

the MoU signature was continued by a presentation of library policy by Deputy of Library Resources Development Supriyanto, and a presentation of information technology for library by Head of automation sub division Joko Santoso. The signature of MoU was attended by Head of Center of Library Development and Reading Interest Research T. Syamsul Bahri, Head of Division of Special and Public Library Development Sri Sumekar, Head of Division of Library Cooperation and Automation Dina Isyanti, Head of TU Deputy II Sub Division Markus Tendean and Head of Public Relation sub division Agus Sutoyo.

Legislative Members of Sukabumi City visiting National Library of Indonesia

Jakarta - In order to develop libraries in Sukabumi, Legislative members of Sukabumi Comission III on Tuesday 9/9 visited National Library of Indonesia. The party was welcomed at management meeting room by Deputy of Library material and information services Development Liliek Sulistiyowati, Head of Center of Library Services Woro Titi Haryanti, Head of Center of Library Material Development Suyatno and Head of General Collection Services Lili Suarni.

The legislative party was lead by Priatman, where on the welcoming remarks said that their visit to National Library was to observe the development of library closely and to say thank you of the mobile library aid given to Sukabumi`s Public Library, but we still need more books for school libraries which condition are poor, since the income of Sukabumi City is too small to help those schools, so we hoped National Library could provide some books for those school libraries.

Deputy of Library Material Development and Information Services Liliek Sulistiyowati on her answers said that Director of National Library of Indonesia was apologize since on the same time there was a discussion with legislative members, but basically school libraries are the responsibility of Department of National Education based on education system law which stated that library is an important resource for learning, so you could push Department of Education to send some books to those schools, National Library is only supporting.

The legislative members also received some information regarding National Library of Indonesia from Head of Center of Library and Information Services and Suyatno Head of Center of Library Material Development and also Lili Suarni Head of General Collection Services.

The legislative members were: Yanas Malik (Bulan Bintang), Dody Umaran (PAN), Maman Warman (PDI-P), Enceng Sutardi (Golkar), Aisah Sasmita (Golkar), Mohamad Ikhsan, Adi Darmadi and Priatman as the party leader.

Barack Obama Win



Washington - The world welcomed its leader Barack Obama to become the new U.S. president. Obama victory as the beginning of a new historic era.

"With your vote, the people of America have chosen change, openness and optimism," said French President Nicolas Sarkozy in a letter to Obama as This AFP news agency on Wednesday (5/11/2008).

"Victory brilliant as a gift on your tireless commitment to serve people in the United States," said Sarkozy.

Congratulation came from Chinese President Hu Jintao. "In the new historical era, I bring forward to working with our constructive bilateral relationship to new levels," said President Hu in the statement tertulisnya.

Prime Minister (PM) Gordon Brown UK even Obama praised the political and enthusiastically "progresifnya values and vision for the future."

Also delivered congratulatory German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh calling Obama as its extraordinary victory. Singh also invited Obama to visit to India.

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd mention Obama victory as the dream become a reality. "45 years ago Martin Luther King's dream of a United States that men and female will not be assessed according to the color of their skin but by their character," said Rudd.

"Today is what America has done is to make the dream become a reality," he added.

Congratulation also presented leaders of Iraq, Palestine and others.
